A Home Rooted in the Hills of Barcelona
Perched on a steep hillside northeast of Barcelona, Barcelona House by Ström Architects is a striking residence that merges panoramic Mediterranean views with the quiet embrace of pine forests. Designed for minimal impact on the surrounding landscape, the house balances solidity and lightness through its thoughtful use of levels, materials, and cantilevered forms.
Architecture in Two Layers
Although conceived as a two-level residence, the home is experienced primarily on the upper floor. This level houses the main living areas, the master suite, and a wide terrace with an L-shaped infinity pool that frames the view of the sea. The lower level, partially buried into the slope, provides additional accommodation while remaining discreet within the hillside.
The oversailing roof, extending up to six meters, shades the glass façades and creates a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glazing enhances the continuity of views, while an interior olive tree acts as a symbolic anchor within the open-plan living space.

Materials and Atmosphere
The palette combines concrete, local stone, and oak finishes, striking a dialogue between robustness and warmth. Microcement flooring and oak ceilings soften the interiors, offering a tactile counterpoint to the solid structural elements. This blend of materials grounds the house in its environment, while adding a refined contemporary character.
Living with the Landscape
The design strategy aims to dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape. By embedding one floor into the hillside and extending the roof canopy, the house reads as a lightweight form resting gently on the slope. The infinity pool mirrors the sea, visually merging architecture with horizon.

Conclusion
Barcelona House exemplifies how contemporary architecture can both frame and respect nature. With its understated footprint, material honesty, and seamless connection to the environment, the residence embodies Ström Architects’ vision: a home that feels not imposed on the land, but rather grown from it.
